John Edwards rallies against nuclear weapons
Speaking for a crowd of about 200 people in Tipton, Iowa on Sunday, John Edwards slammed the Bush nuclear policies which have led to increased proliferation of nuclear weapons:
"I don't believe that we can control nuclear weapons anymore. I always use Pakistan as the example. Here's this dangerous leader -- I'm sorry -- this leader who's not on steady ground, politically, in his own country. If he loses his power, then a radical government could easily take over in Pakistan. They have a nuclear weapon. They're in constant conflict with India over Kashmir. This is a very dangerous, volatile situation. The bottom line (is) Bush and gang have new nuclear weapons, don't pay any attention to non-proliferation treaties. That is exactly the opposite of the way we should be going."
Edwards was also candid on the topic of military spending, saying that new-nukes and expensive, "state of the art" weapons, such as revived space-based weapons-systems, were a waste of money:
"We're spending billions of dollars on it with no proof whatsoever that it works,"
When asked how to best reduce the US defense budget, Edwards replied,
"I want to be the president of the United States who leads an initiative to rid the planet of nuclear weapons,"
Most people are not even aware that Bush, and the Department of Energy have been pushing for funding to develop a whole new generation of nuclear weapons called "Reliable Replacement Warheads." These new weapons would be smaller and, in the words of the administration, be "more tactically use-able." This is why it is so important for leaders like John Edwards to take a strong stance on new nukes. We also need to call on the Senate to make sure they follow through on congress' lead in blocking funds for the Reliable Replacement Warhead. Click here to take action now.
