Voters for Peace and Security is a project of Peace Action West. We are working to get presidential candidates to adopt a smarter foreign policy platform and frame the public debate about America’s role in the world.
America needs a foreign policy that embodies the best values of the American people; one that’s based on the promotion of peace and security, nuclear non-proliferation and the use of multilateral diplomacy over preemptive conflict. In order to achieve these goals, we need strong and committed leadership.
The 2008 presidential election opens the opportunity for dramatic progress. More than a dozen candidates are battling for the nomination, with their words and actions determining the tone of the debate and their position on peace and security issues.
The objectives of Voters for Peace and Security are:
- Raise the Issues:
We will train and mobilize peace minded voters and concerned citizens to attend candidate campaign events, ask effective questions and record the candidates’ statements. For information on our upcoming organizing workshops, or if you would like to sign up for our next training and/or schedule one for your organization, please email us by filling out our contact form, here.
- Educate About the Issues:
We will educate and organize concerned citizens in early caucus and primary states. Our website, voter4peace.org, is a resource center as well as an action and organizing tool for all voters and advocates for peace and security.
- Make Peace a Priority:
We will work with the different campaigns, members of the media, and the public at large to make this a top political issue, and to make sure that peace and security is a central part of candidate stories, debates and interviews.
Voters for Peace & Security Campaign Goals
Our Goal: Help elect a pro-peace candidate
The goal of the campaign is to mobilize people who are committed to voting only for candidates who stand for a foreign policy platform that includes a quick and complete withdrawal of troops from Iraq, opposition to American development of new nuclear weapons, and US leadership toward a nuclear free world. We aim to demonstrate to the candidates that these voters comprise a powerful block, and that we present a winning foreign policy platform.
Our Scope: The Nevada Caucuses and California Primaries
The Nevada Caucuses have been moved to January 19th, 2008. The California Primaries are February 5, 2008. These are some of the earliest stops in the presidential candidate nomination process. Therefore the Nevada and California nominations will have a huge impact on the presidential primaries, and candidates are frequently traveling to both states. Nevadans and Californians have an unprecedented opportunity to have a significant impact on the direction of regional and national politics.
Sign Our Pledge: Please sign our Voters for Peace pledge, and email it to your friends and neighbors. The pledges will be delivered to all the candidates’ campaigns. Phone numbers will be used to mobilize on the day of the vote. It is critical that peace voters come out in large numbers on January 19 and February 5th to show the rest of the country that peace and security are our presidential priority!
If you would like more information about our campaign, or would like to join us in making peace a presidential priority and becoming a voter for peace and security please email us by filling out our contact form, here or you can donate today.
